HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Computing Centre, the first ICT Unit, in UNN, was established to provide the following services to the University. Such services are – teaching (maps, charts, drawings, modelling and demonstration of modern techniques) that UNN graduates may be expected to apply in commerce and industry. Other services are rendered to the research programmes of the University, obtaining and maintaining computing and data processing equipment, employing and training adequate staff for operations and programme preparation. Directing the design and implementation of data processing systems and University projects, providing consultancy services to the University users and outside agencies and services to Postgraduate students and more importantly also, advising University Management on matters pertaining to the application of computing to teaching, research and administration. These continued with upgraded systems to meet, both the demand of the day and to be abreast with today’s technological advancement.

Following these laudable services by Computing Centre to the University was the establishment of a Cyber Cafe to respond to the yearning of staff and students to browse the Internet for materials to aid research in 2004. With the Cyber Cafe still running, came the Staff Information Communications and Technology Capacity Building Programme – SICTCBP. Its sole aim was to impart IT knowledge to many staff digital emigrants and increase their service delivery to the University. UNN students were not left out in ICT awareness. Theirs was called Mandatory Information Technology Training Programme – MITTP. They were being handled by AfriHUBU NN America at the present day renovated Distant Learning Building. Two faculties were later shifted to Computing Centre.

By 2006, when UNN Administration and AfriHUB dissolved their acquaintance, Computing Centre took over the MITT programme for all the nine faculties in Nsukka Campus. Since then, up to 2015, MITT was being handled by the four remaining staff of Computing Centre.

It will be noted that about 10,000 UNN Students have been trained on the Mandatory Information Technology Training Programme to help them compete with their colleagues in the outside world.

GOALS OF MITT

In supporting the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba’s vision of taking ICT in University of Nigeria to its great heights above others, the ICT Unit under the Training Section in Computing Centre has really proved its worth in fulfilling the mandate of the Nigeria Universities Commission – NUC to Universities in 2006.

Some of the goals are as follows:

  1. Aid students to be ICT literate
  2. Aid students to be ready to compete with colleagues outside
  3. Move with the IT trend globally
  4. Aid students to improve on their research studies

2015 MITT PROGRAMME

In 2015, the number of students handled was fewer than previous years owing to the student’s protest which led to their vacation of the school. As a result, their examinations commenced as they returned.

METHOD OF TEACHING

The Unit has a Lab with materials for training such as laptops, projectors and other electronic gadgets, with internet access. Training is via the E-learning platform, in which, students take a computer based exam (CBT)at the end of the course. This was introduced few years ago on Moodle and or Blackboard E-Learning Software. Participation Certificates are issued to students who passed the MITT Exam.

Teaching times

A time table is drawn up to enable Instructors know their time schedule. The time duration for each course is 2 hours after which the students sign an attendance list. Each week, classes run from Monday to Thursday while Friday is reserved for some overlap of classes. Classes hold between 9:00 – 11:00am, 11: 00am – 1.00pmand 2.00 to 4:00pm each day.

Collection of Students information

The Training Unit, through the ICT Director, writes the Faculties requesting the different Departments to submit names of their students in a given format (using Excel) as directed by the Centre. This information is passed on to the Faculties early in the session, before the beginning of the Academic Session, to avoid clashes of time schedules for other Departmental Courses.

Instructors And Their Faculties/Departments

MITT Instructors are quite few and several demands have been made to the ICT Director to add to the number. Unfortunately, the demand is not forthcoming and the task is hectic with only four staff taking the ten faculties.

The Instructors and the departments they handle, in 2015, are as follows:

Details Of Students With Their Departments

Number of Students Trained On Mitt from 2006 To 2015

Scope of Teaching

The plan and size is usually according to the ICT Director’s memo to the faculty Deans and Head of Departments.

MITT CERTIFICATES MITT CERTIFICATES

Note: We request that certificate be written and signed at the end of each examination to enable students collect it/them before convocation.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Allocation of Credit load

At least 1 (one) Unit load is being requested for MITT as this will enhance the students to be serious.

Additional Instructors

Requests have been made to add more instructors to the existing four handling the entire population of approx. 10,500 students in Nsukka Campus.

Laptops

Laptops are needed in the computing centre lab to replace the non-functional as well as obsolete ones (outdated and unsupported Windows XP) to enhance the training of students on MITT and for better hands-on practice; otherwise the aim will be defeated.
